Tall Timbers Publishing Corporation was formed in 1996, specifically to publish the Brummitt-Taylor Music Listening Program: A Non-Directed Approach. When Karen and David first started working together on their unique approach to music listening in 1985, their intention always was to share their work with other educators. They first presented a session on non-directed listening at the B. C. Music Educators annual conference in February, 1986, and at a subsequent conference in 1989. In September of 1987, Karen began an in-service program on music listening in Langley school district that ran for several years. They gave presentations in Abbotsford school district in 1990, and in Vancouver school district in 1990 and 1993-4. A session was presented at the University of Calgary Summer Programme in 1990. Non-directed listening was shared with an international audience at the International Kodaly Symposium in 1991, and in the journal of the International Kodaly Society in 1993. An article summarizing the results of the first ten years of the program appeared in the Spring 1996 issue of Alla Breve, the journal of the Kodaly Society of Canada. By the mid-1990s, the word was spreading via the “teacher network” to dozens of schools. The decision was made to publish the program as it currently appears – a comprehensive resource manual and a custom set of 8 CDs. Since the publication of the Brummitt-Taylor Music Listening Program: A Non-Directed Approach in 1996, Tall Timbers Publishing Corporation has added a few more titles to our list of publications. Our intent is to provide educational resources in the field of fine arts, materials that have artistic integrity and high educational value. Our resources are designed to to be user-friendly, requiring little additional teacher preparation. A daunting task indeed, but one which we eagerly embrace. So, we are growing slowly. As the idea of non-directed listening spreads its way across North America and around the globe, we are receiving increased interest in our company and the materials we produce. And that is fine with us. We are a small company and like the idea of going slow amid the often frenetic pace of the 21st century. Thank you for visiting our site.
